3.5-Meter-Tall Golden Roosters Announce Good Fortune as the Tri-Star Flower Carnival Kicks Off

On the 20th, the Sanyi Township Office in Yilan unveiled a pair of 3.5-meter-tall golden roosters as the zodiac mascots for 2017, marking the start of the upcoming Lunar New Year and flower carnival. The roosters will be exhibited at the flower field area in front of the Sanyi gas station from mid-January to the Lantern Festival of 2017 (106 in the Republic of China calendar).

The pair of golden roosters—male and female—were created by local artisan couple Cai Wenbin and Xie Meie. Their frames are made of steel reinforcement, while the exterior features bamboo strips woven and glued together to resemble feathers, with a transparent coating applied to preserve the original color.

Sanyi Township Mayor Huang Xiyong stated, “The body retains the natural golden hue of the bamboo, making it both eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing, with a look that feels organic. The comb, tail, and claws are painted in bright colors, vivid and lifelike, creating an endearing appearance. We hope to channel the spirit of painting to showcase vitality and vigor. Everyone is welcome to visit Sanyi, enjoy the flowers, celebrate the spring, and ring in the New Year with the golden roosters.” The Sanyi Flower Carnival is set to launch vibrantly on January 13, 2017 (106 in the ROC calendar), with the flower season expected to last until around the Lantern Festival. The township office has planted 85 hectares of rapeseed and yellow cosmos flowers, mainly distributed in the Shuanghe Redevelopment Area at the end of Provincial Highway 196 and the flower-themed area in front of the Sanyi CPC gas station.

The flower field area will feature large, intricately designed lanterns created by the Yilan Prison, transforming Three Kingdoms figurines, popular lucky deity characters, and well-known cartoon figures into colorful lantern displays. Additional attractions include a silver willow tunnel, lantern corridors, and landscape gardens, adding a playful and festive atmosphere.
