Two major meteor showers to peak, flexible traffic controls implemented on Yangmingshan

Many people love stargazing, and there are two meteor showers to enjoy soon! The Lyrids and Eta Aquariids will peak one after the other in late April and early May. With clear weather and high visibility, it's expected that the stunning celestial displays will be clearly visible.

The Lyrids meteor shower occurs annually between April 16 and 25, with this year’s peak expected in the early hours of April 23 at around 2 AM, featuring up to 90 meteors per hour. The Eta Aquariids will peak around May 6, with about 50 meteors per hour at its maximum. As it is currently the transition between spring and summer, with clear weather and minimal light pollution, the meteor showers are expected to be clearly visible.

Although the number of meteors in both the Lyrids and Eta Aquariids showers is not as high as that of major showers like the Perseids or Geminids, the favorable season and excellent stargazing conditions mean the Traffic Bureau anticipates many stargazers will head to the mountains. Therefore, flexible traffic controls will be implemented in the Yangmingshan area based on actual weather and traffic conditions to avoid congestion. Travelers planning to go stargazing can take extra Yangmingshan buses running during this period and pay attention to nighttime driving safety.
