On December 21st, the Winter Solstice, according to traditional customs in Penghu, one must eat the hand-molded “Chicken Mom and Dog Baby,” a unique rural culture passed down on the Orchid Island for hundreds of years.
The so-called “Chicken Mom and Dog Baby” refers to adorable and colorful animals—such as cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens—molded from glutinous rice dough after a series of intricate preparatory steps. In recent years, shapes like ingots and airplanes have also been added. After being cooked and used in worship ceremonies, they are shared and enjoyed, a scene commonly seen across Penghu during the Winter Solstice festivities.

Before the Winter Solstice, farmers complete the plowing of their fields, allowing the land to rest and rejuvenate. When the Winter Solstice arrives, they mold the “Chicken Mom and Dog Baby” by hand to offer prayers for the prosperity of livestock and a bountiful harvest. This tradition, which has a history of several hundred years, is also one of the few traditional customs still preserved in Penghu today.
