Pure white tofu rock: a new IG hotspot with breathtaking views rivaling South America's salt flats

In addition to the famous tofu rock scenery along the Touqian River, a stunningly similar tofu rock landscape has recently emerged near Nanliao Fishing Port in Hsinchu.

This new hidden gem, the "Tofu Rock Ladder," is located along the coast near the international kite-flying competition venue. Stacked layers of pure white, tofu-like stone bricks paired with endless ocean views create scenery reminiscent of Argentina’s salt flats—earning it the nickname “Little Salt Flat.”

With a tidal range of 3.5 meters at Nanliao Fishing Port, slope protection works are essential around the breakwater. This time, the city government opted for more aesthetically pleasing natural concrete blocks to construct artificial slope protection. The specially designed fish-scale-shaped stepped breakwaters were created to provide safe access points for visitors to enjoy the coastline.

The pure white Tofu Rock Ladder, paired with blue skies, white clouds, and the ocean, creates a healing view that has become a new IG hotspot. Aside from seeing the “Little Salt Flat,” visitors to Nanliao Fishing Port can also explore the area around the tourist service center, which features Mediterranean-style blue-and-white architecture.

For those seeking other unique sights, you can also visit the tofu rocks along the Touqian River in Zhubei or head to the North Coast to admire the Laomei Green Reef. The Touqian River tofu rocks are also artificial breakwater blocks, designed to reduce riverbed erosion. The Laomei Green Reef is a seasonal wonder, visible only from March to May, when large patches of green algae cover the volcanic rock slots, forming a striking landscape.
