Drive-Free Firefly Beauty: Five Dreamy Firefly-Watching Spots

Every year starting in April is the season when fireflies appear in large numbers, and many tourists specially plan firefly-watching trips across northern, central, and southern Taiwan. In addition to mountainous or forested areas, there are also many spots in the Taipei metropolitan area where you can see fireflies. The hiking trails and parks in the Taipei and New Taipei areas have seen significant environmental improvements in recent years, allowing fireflies to thrive. Now, you don’t have to go far to enjoy the beautiful sight of fireflies.

1. Xindian Wenshan Farm
Xindian Wenshan Farm allows you to see swarms of glowing fireflies from April to August each year in its tea fields, walking trails, and camping grounds, making it the largest firefly habitat in northern Taiwan. This year’s firefly-watching packages are divided into one-day and half-day tours, featuring activities tailored to the farm’s ecology such as tea-picking experiences, owl ornament DIYs, firefly lantern painting, firefly introductions, and nighttime firefly viewing — all offering a rich and exciting experience.

2. Sanxia Yuan Mountain Ecological Trail
Yuan Mountain in Sanxia is an ecological trail with a very broad view. During the day, reaching the summit allows you to overlook vast urban scenery, while at night, the forested paths begin to sparkle with fireflies, letting you observe their activities.

3. Nangang Jiuzhuangli Osmanthus Waterfront Trail
The Jiuzhuangli area in Nangang District features the “Osmanthus Waterfront Trail,” the “Osmanthus Suspension Bridge Trail,” and the “Model Tea Factory Hillside Trail.” Due to its rich ecology and limited external visitors, large numbers of fireflies can be seen flying through the air on summer nights, creating a spectacular and magical scene.
