A Michelin-recommended historic Japanese-era restaurant and a hipster café: No. 1 Grain Silo

Located in Songshan District, Taipei, No. 1 Grain Silo was renovated from Taipei’s first grain silo built during the Japanese colonial period. Its uniquely historic space and ambiance, along with signature dishes such as whole roasted Gui Ding chicken and bone-in short rib noodles, have earned it a spot on Michelin’s “Bib Gourmand” list.

Built in 1944, No. 1 Grain Silo sits on the site that once served as Taipei’s wartime food storage facility during World War II, making it highly significant historically. In 2012, the Taipei City Government launched the “Old Buildings, New Lives” cultural movement initiative, commissioning private entities to restore and repurpose the city’s unused historical buildings. As a result, No. 1 Grain Silo emerged with a completely renewed look.

The ground floor of the building houses the Lepu Hui Nong brand supermarket, which collects Taiwan’s champion agricultural products; the second floor is home to No. 1 Grain Silo, which has garnered official recognition from Michelin. By combining these locally sourced champion ingredients with Taiwan’s diverse culinary heritage across different eras, the venue has been transformed into a uniquely styled creative dining restaurant.

The operators have put great effort into sourcing Taiwan’s top-quality and award-winning ingredients. Their cooking methods blend Japanese, Chinese, and Western influences. Dishes such as roasted spice-marinated pork belly rolls, herb-roasted chicken, and the No. 1 Grain Silo bone-in short rib noodles are must-tries.
