Laomei Green Stone Troughs—a unique landscape in Taiwan
Affected by climate warming, this year the Laomei Stone Troughs began greening as early as January, about two months ahead of schedule. Many experts and visitors also believe it may whiten earlier than usual. By the popular month of March, the stone troughs are already covered in a lush green carpet of algae, making it an ideal time for visitors to go and take photos.
Currently, the stone troughs are in their peak green algae growth period, and the spectacular beauty created by the unique colors and graceful lines
The green stone troughs typically appear from mid-March to early May, with the most beautiful period around early April during the Tomb-Sweeping Festival. The green stone troughs coastline stretches nearly 2 kilometers, with neatly aligned coastal grooves covered in algae, creating rows of vibrant green stone troughs that paint the entire shore in a fresh green hue. The most stunning moment comes when ocean waves crash against the troughs, sending up bursts of spray—the waves burst like fireworks along the shoreline, presenting a breathtaking sight that leaves everyone in awe.

The North Coast National Scenic Area Administration also urges visitors not to step on the stone troughs to avoid affecting algal growth, and staff will be on-site to advise accordingly. In addition, those planning to visit and take photos are advised to check the low tide times for Shimen District via the Central Weather Bureau in advance, to ensure they can fully enjoy the beauty of the stone troughs without being hindered by high tide.
