The striking white art hillscape features Taiwan's first ever sloped-shaped art museum

Since being upgraded to a municipality, Taoyuan has actively developed tourism and landmark structures in recent years, including Taiwan’s largest open-air American-style shopping mall, Huatai Luxury Outlet, the Taoyuan Airport MRT, and the commencement of construction on Terminal 3 at Taoyuan Airport. Now, it is set to build a design-forward municipal art museum in the Zhongzheng Cultural and Artistic District, linking it with the surrounding 10-kilometer urban planning area to become a prominent new tourist attraction.

After more than two months of evaluation, the design competition for the new Taoyuan City Art Museum was won by the “Hillscape” concept proposed jointly by Taiwan’s Shih Chao-Yung Architects and Japan’s Yamamoto & Field Shop Co., Ltd., beating out renowned Dutch architecture firm MVRDV and Germany’s leading landscape design team TOPOTEK1.

The art museum’s design concept is “a playful pavilion and a landscaped building.” It not only features a bold and innovative hill-like appearance but also makes flexible use of space, cleverly integrating with Qingtang Park and the surrounding landscape. The main structure consists of two buildings — one with five floors above ground and one below, and the other with three floors above ground and one below — connected by an elevated sky bridge.
