When staying in hotels while traveling abroad, rooms are always presented to guests in their cleanest state, but there are still some areas that accumulate high levels of bacteria, including TV remote controls, light switches, bedspreads, and more. In fact, American professors and experts have found that most surfaces in a room carry considerable amounts of bacteria, so guests may want to pay extra attention on their next stay.

1. TV remote controls, air conditioner controls, and light switches
Devices such as remote controls, lights, telephones, and keyboards are among the most frequently touched, making them hotspots for bacterial growth. They are sometimes overlooked by cleaning staff, and these bacteria can be transferred to other areas via fingers and other body parts.

2. Bathroom walls, sinks, and toilet flush handles
Areas around toilets are also high in bacteria. When flushing, many viruses and fecal bacteria can become airborne and settle on walls, toilet paper, handles, and more. The humid environment further creates ideal conditions for bacterial growth.

3. Bedspreads and carpets
Although hotels change bed linens and towels, bedspreads are not always replaced, which can lead to a buildup of high levels of bacteria.

4. Hair dryers
Hotel hair dryers are also areas with high bacterial accumulation. Hair dryers are often stored in drawers or bathrooms—places prone to bacterial growth. Many guests don’t even use them to dry their hair; some use them to dry personal clothing instead.

5. Kettles and cups
Kettles, drinking cups, and utensils are also items that cleaning staff often overlook. Moreover, you never know how previous guests have used them, so it’s advisable to disinfect them before use.
