106th Anniversary of Alishan Forest Railway, a Potential World Heritage Site in Taiwan

The Alishan Forest Railway has now been in service for 106 years, operating since 1912. It remains a beloved and widely-followed attraction for both domestic and international visitors, and stands as one of Taiwan’s most iconic tourist destinations!

In 2003, the Alishan Forest Railway was selected as a potential World Heritage Site in Taiwan. Its selection was based on its 762mm narrow-gauge mountain railway, which incorporates four out of the world's five major engineering techniques for mountain railways: horseshoe curves, spiral routes, zigzag switchbacks, and the unique Shay geared steam locomotive.

Riding the Alishan Forest Railway to enjoy cherry blossoms, take photos of cherry blossoms and trains, stargaze under the Milky Way at night, or watch the sunrise early in the morning are all popular activities. The King Cherry Blossom at the Alishan Work Station is a must-see spring highlight.
