The history of the Sapporo Beer Museum is essentially a microcosm of Japan’s beer industry. It was here that Japan’s first drop of beer was brewed (Meiji 9, 1876). In addition to displaying the development history of Japan’s beer industry, the museum also showcases various models of brewing equipment. Next to the beer museum is the Sapporo Beer Garden (サッポロビール園), renovated from a historic red-brick factory building, where you can enjoy Sapporo Beer and Hokkaido seafood in a unique atmosphere. Located in Asahikawa, the Otakuyama Sake Museum displays valuable items related to traditional Japanese techniques, including the history and culture of sake brewing. The museum exhibits many historical materials dating back about 330 years, as well as not only brewing tools but also ukiyo-e prints and related literature—well worth exploring in detail.

Traveling from Sapporo to Asahikawa, after experiencing the rich brewing culture of the north, head to Furano to visit a winery that offers free tours. Furano is one of Japan’s top wine-producing regions, and grapes are one of its specialties. At the winery, you can observe the wine-making process and sample different wines. From June to August during the production season, the entire factory and vast lavender fields glow under the lights, creating a dreamy atmosphere. Furano is also known for another local specialty: dairy products. At the Furano Cheese Studio, you can participate in the cheese-making process, observe how cheese is produced, and even sample various cheeses. Admission is free, but courses such as cheese-making, ice cream-making, and handmade bread and cookie workshops have varying prices.
