To allow Taiwanese food lovers to indulge in Singaporean flavors without leaving the country, the Singapore Tourism Board has once again meticulously planned the second edition of the “Very Delicious ~ Singapore Food Street” event, scheduled for November 27. Over the course of three days, renowned Singaporean food vendors will gather at Raohe Night Market to satisfy Taiwanese palates with the most authentic traditional Peranakan flavors.
Last year, the Singapore Tourism Board’s first-ever night market food street event attracted tens of thousands of visitors to Raohe Night Market within just three days. This year, not only will the event be expanded at the same location, but it will also spotlight “Peranakan cuisine” as the culinary highlight. Peranakan culture is a unique heritage that evolved among the Straits Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Huang Yuanjing, Director of the Singapore Tourism Board’s Taiwan Office, explained that when Chinese immigrants married locals in the region, their descendants came to be known as Straits Chinese—referred to as “Baba” for men and “Nyonya” for women. These communities were deeply influenced by the cultures of Malaysia, Indonesia, India, England, Thailand, Vietnam, and other regions, developing a distinct hybrid culture. The cuisine prepared by Nyonya matriarchs, blending Chinese, Malay, and other international cooking styles, is called Peranakan cuisine. It typically features abundant spices such as coconut milk, turmeric, and lemongrass, resulting in bold, tangy, spicy, sweet, and richly flavorful dishes.
The Singapore Tourism Board has also specially invited Lin Hailun, the operator of the over 60-year-old renowned Peranakan restaurant “Kim Choo Kueh Chang,” to make a special cross-strait trip to Taiwan. She will, for the first time, unveil the closely guarded secret recipes and cooking techniques of Peranakan cuisine, and personally prepare the festive staple “Sayur Lodeh” (coconut curry vegetables) and the seafood-rich, spicy, and tender fish dish “Otak.” Food enthusiasts who love Singaporean cuisine shouldn’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from the masters.
From 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM on November 27, and from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM on November 28 and 29, visitors to Taipei’s Raohe Tourist Night Market (entrances on Raohe Street and Bade Road) can savor authentic Singaporean Peranakan delicacies, as well as popular favorites among Taiwanese such as Hainanese chicken rice, kaya toast, and bak kut teh. Additionally, this year will feature a mystery guest for an exciting Singapore-Taiwan food face-off, expected to be even more intense and grander than last year’s, sure to create a thrilling climax at the event.
Beyond enjoying great food, from now until December 10, participants can visit the Singapore Tourism Board’s official Chinese website to join the Singapore Food Scout online campaign. By sharing photos and stories about Singaporean cuisine, you could win major prizes such as a three-day, two-night Taiwan-Singapore free and easy trip (one winner, two people can go together) or a pair of Singapore’s mischievous lion plush toys. Those who take part in the forwarding campaign may also receive exquisite gifts such as RISIS orchid pendants, limited-edition 1GB Singapore USB drives, or mobile phone charms featuring chili crab.
