Similar to Taiwan’s old terrace houses, Edo-period nagaya often had their entrance facing the street, which served as a shop, while the living quarters of craftsmen or residents were located at the rear of the narrow structure. For convenience, these also had their own entrances, resulting in a neighborhood where people moved about through the lanes. Because households were closely connected, a warm sense of community flourished.

With the revival of retro aesthetics, the everyday scenes within these narrow lanes are filled with a strong nostalgic charm, attracting many creative and independently minded shop owners. This has led to a recent trend of renovating these old nagaya. Whether it’s transforming the interiors into modern restaurants incorporating contemporary lighting art, or preserving the original architectural features of the nagaya to create vintage lifestyle shops, every piece of furniture and play of light evokes memories of those bygone days. As visitors explore and hunt for treasures, they can enjoy both delicious food and unique shopping experiences. This has become a popular trend among Osaka’s youth, and every corner and street in Nakanochō is now brimming with creative energy constantly sprouting to life.
