Best spot to view gassho-style houses:: Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck

It’s no exaggeration to say that gassho-style houses are one of Japan’s most dreamlike travel destinations. Here, the mountains are covered in fresh greenery in spring, wildflowers bloom everywhere in summer, maple leaves turn fiery red in late autumn, and snow falls gently in winter. No matter when you visit, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. It’s this scenic charm that draws travelers from all over the world to the gassho houses year-round.

The gassho-style houses gained widespread fame thanks to a German architect. During his field research on traditional Japanese dwellings across the country, he was utterly awestruck when he encountered these structures. In his writings, he praised this traditional Japanese architectural style — with thatched roofs shaped like hands folded in prayer — as “an extremely logical and precious example of vernacular Japanese architecture, unmatched even within Japan.” In 1996, the Ogimachi gassho village in Shirakawa-go was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
