Matsukawa Onsen is a hot spring resort celebrated for its high-quality waters. Legend says it was discovered in 1062 during the Heian period by a retainer of the warrior Abe no Sadato. Its milky white hot spring water is particularly known for its skin-beautifying effects. Currently, there are only four hot spring ryokan in the area, among which Kyōun-so, Matsukawa-so, and Matsufuji-so are the most famous—all built along the Matsukawa River. Due to their relatively remote location and the preservation of mixed-gender baths, they are classified as “secret hot springs” in Japan and are highly praised by hot spring enthusiasts.

Perched within the canyon of the Matsukawa River, Matsufuji-so is the oldest ryokan in the Matsukawa Onsen area. Its open-air bath is built along the riverbank, allowing you to enjoy the soothing sounds of the bubbling stream while soaking. A must-visit here is the renowned cave rock bath, an open-air bath accessible only by crossing a suspension bridge over the Matsukawa Valley from the main ryokan building. Completely surrounded by rocks and accessible only via a narrow staircase, bathing here offers a unique experience as if entering an ancient, untouched hidden realm—an unforgettable one.
