Kyushu is the closest Japanese archipelago to Taiwan, with a flight time of just 2 hours and 10 minutes. In recent years, it has become a highly popular destination for independent leisure travel, whether by bicycle or self-driving. Since 2010, a series of new facilities and events have been introduced across Kyushu, with the most talked-about being the Nagasaki Unzen Obama Onsen Footbath, scheduled for completion in April.2Stretching along the coastline of Obama Marine Park, this footbath will be 105 meters long—potentially the longest in the world. It’s especially recommended to visit at sunset to enjoy the beautiful evening scenery. Meanwhile, the Kyushu Miyazaki Prefecture Nichinan Line sightseeing express train, named “Yamakage Umikage” (Mountain and Sea Fortune), debuted in October 2009. With only two carriages and an appearance resembling a wooden toy train, its cute design is particularly appealing to children. The train is made entirely from wood sourced in Miyazaki Prefecture and passes through popular tourist spots such as Aoshima and Ooi. Passengers can even reserve the entire train for private use.
