Hidden along Taiwan’s east coast are many uniquely designed homestays, their exteriors deliberately crafted to resemble a “desert-style” ruin. The thick concrete structures are covered in lush greenery, looking like homes abandoned for thousands of years. This successfully creates a wilderness aesthetic that has attracted trend-conscious travelers to book in droves.

Nestled in Hualien County, “Desert Style” was designed by renowned architect Chen Guanhua. Moving away from the technological feel of bustling cities, this place uses the sound of Pacific waves, vast green lawns, and blue skies with white clouds as its best decorations. The primal feel here is completely unlike elements of modern life.

The reason for building this peculiar homestay in such a remote location is to provide a tranquil, undisturbed private world. The hope is for guests to temporarily let go of the noise of the city, work worries, and other pressures, and instead immerse themselves in the slow-living atmosphere of the moment. For this reason, there is no Wi-Fi or TV in the rooms. Instead, guests are welcomed into a public lounge space filled with the aroma of books.

No matter where you wander, you’ll be surrounded by a lush natural vibe, yet also mixed with the avant-garde feel of an abandoned industrial residence. These two seemingly conflicting styles blend harmoniously into an alternative historical charm — like a forgotten secret base that has witnessed stories of time yet remains undiscovered. Its unique character is gradually gaining recognition on social media.

The interior decor also reflects the owner’s vision, focusing on a simple and comfortable style. Wooden floors and furniture feature various patterns — understated yet elegant. In the especially high-ceilinged living room, there is a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that bring mountain and sea views right into sight. Alternatively, guests can head to the outdoor area, sit in a lounge chair, and enjoy the breathtaking view of the blue sea and sky gently caressed by the sea breeze.
