Free experiences of traditional Korean activities: pitch-pot, shuttlecock kicking, and becoming a Dae Jang Geum

Korea, having endured the historical periods of the Three Kingdoms, Silla, and Goryeo, possesses a rich and varied traditional culture that serves as a major tourist draw. Those enchanted by Korea often engage with its splendid Hanbok or step into the shoes of characters from period dramas. For those eager to experience traditional Korean culture, aside from visiting various folk villages, the Seoul Cheonggyecheon Tourist Information Center (TIC) near Cheonggyecheon offers a range of cultural experiences free of charge—visitors are encouraged to take advantage of them.

Located on the underground first floor of the Korea Tourism Organization next to Cheonggyecheon, the Tourist Information Center not only features life-sized cutouts of K-pop stars, where you can enjoy video soundtracks and the latest popular music videos, but also provides photo booths where you can take composite photos with your favorite Korean idols. The center’s travel exhibition hall also offers souvenir sales, free travel brochures, and comprehensive consultation services related to travel in Korea.

The Tourist Information Center also offers highly praised free traditional Korean cultural experiences that allow visitors to engage directly with heritage activities on a regular basis. These include trying on Hanbok—choose from various styles suitable for different occasions and age groups and take photos in your favorite outfit; receiving a handwritten version of your name in Korean calligraphy, created on traditional Hanji (Korean paper) by calligraphers dressed in Hanbok; crafting Hanji bookmarks or making traditional clothing items using Hanji; as well as playing traditional folk games such as pitch-pot and spinning tops.

During special holidays like Lunar New Year and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), multilingual staff will explain in detail the rules of folk games such as Yutnori (Korean board game), shuttlecock kicking, pitch-pot, top spinning, and the “elephant hair hat” game, and guide visitors in playing together.
