"Hatsumode" is the most important New Year's activity for Japanese people, referring to the first temple visit of the year. During the New Year period, temples across Japan are packed with worshippers, but joining the crowds at temples is also a traditional part of the celebration. Tokyo’s Asakusa is arguably the most representative sightseeing spot with an Edo-period charm, and its spiritual center, “Senso-ji Temple,” is crowded with “Hatsumode” visitors from day to night during the New Year.
