A Māori feast is a traditional cooking method of the Māori people. The cooking process involves digging a pit in the ground, placing heated stones inside, then arranging the food on top of the stones, and finally covering everything with earth. The heat trapped in the pit slow-cooks the food. Salt is the only seasoning used to allow the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine. When the food is ready, the aroma wafts through the steam—so enticing that even Prince William couldn’t resist putting on gloves and personally trying his hand at preparing the Māori feast.

Located north of Wellington, Kapiti Island is a paradise for native New Zealand birds. With no invasive species present, the island is home to many rare and even extinct bird species that are seldom seen on the New Zealand mainland. The little spotted kiwi, a unique and rare bird, was once the most common type of kiwi. Today, there are only around 1,500 left in New Zealand, and they can only be spotted in protected areas such as Kapiti Island.
