Under the cherry blossom trees at Dan-no-Ura, listen to The Tale of Genji::Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine::Kamakura

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, located near the station and boasting a vast precinct, is the symbol of Kamakura as well as a center of history and politics-religion. Revered by the people for enshrining the guardian deity of warriors who protect the nation, its devotees have steadily grown, and many structures within its grounds are tied to the historical legends of the Minamoto clan. In 1063, Minamoto no Yoritomo, who established the Kamakura Shogunate, elevated the prestige of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine under his jurisdiction to surpass that of any shrine in Kyoto at the height of his power.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, built in the typical Japanese shrine architectural style, is now an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Wakamiya-oji Avenue and Komachi Street in front of the shrine are great spots for shopping in Kamakura. Along Wakamiya-oji, there is a romantic street section called "Dan-gashi," lined with cherry blossoms in the center, surrounded by many long-established specialty shops. When visiting Kamakura to reflect on its history, don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs to give to family and friends.
