Shunsui Wagashi-ya
Japanese people emphasize eating "shunsai" — seasonal ingredients, meaning food that is in season and locally produced at the right time. Located on Hase-dori, Kamakura ~ Shunsui Wagashi-ya is a dessert shop named to reflect Kamakura’s distinct four seasons and its use of seasonal ingredients in crafting a variety of sweets.
Shunsui Wagashi-ya is situated along the must-visit route to the Great Buddha of Kamakura. Though the storefront is small, it is widely renowned in the area. The shop carefully selects its ingredients, including golden azuki beans, Dainagon red beans, and agar used in its homemade jelly, all sourced from Hokkaido and Izu·Kamishima in Japan. The shop believes that using high-quality, fresh, and nutritious ingredients is the key to making delicious desserts.
The shop offers a variety of authentic traditional Japanese sweets. A basic favorite is the matcha shaved ice — a crystal bowl piled high with cool, crushed ice, drizzled with sweetened condensed milk and vibrant green matcha syrup. Served at the high stool seating area by the window, it’s a delightful treat to enjoy while fanning yourself, full of Japanese charm.
And a must-try here is their most famous “signature dessert”: Daibutsu Anko Fruit Jelly (¥840). This dessert uses slightly larger golden azuki beans from Hokkaido than those commonly used, simmered over low heat for over three hours to achieve a soft and creamy red bean paste. The chewy agar is meticulously made by the shop using kamaboko seaweed from Kamishima Island in the Izu Peninsula. Finally, it’s topped with rich soft serve ice cream shaped like the “Daibutsu sitting cross-legged” — not only does the presentation beautifully reflect local character, but the taste is also uniquely exquisite. It has been ranked among the top five Kamakura-style Japanese sweets by voters on a food TV show and was even featured in the popular program “Golden Legend,” earning it the 14th spot on Kamakura’s Best 30 Desserts...Click for detailed attraction information
