Experience the Eight Scenic Spots of Lan Yang and the Opened-for-Tourism Guishan Island

Officially opened to tourism on August 1, 2000, Guishan Island is one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Lan Yang. Every year when registration for island tours opens, it attracts numerous visitors eager to explore this pearl of the sea in the northeast corner. This year, before reopening the island for sightseeing and recreation, the Northeast Coast National Scenic Area Administration, Yilan County Government, and the Yilan Whale Watching Association, among other relevant organizations, held a “Guishan Island Beach Cleanup Campaign,” making the exploration of the island’s unique, rich, and pristine ecological landscape even fresher and cleaner.

Guishan Island is a volcanic island, and it remains an active volcano. Not only can you see underwater volcanic geysers at the island's head, but you can also smell the scent of sulfur. The island covers an area of just 2.85 square kilometers and is geographically divided into three parts: the turtle’s head, shell, and tail. Currently, there is a roughly 650-meter loop trail around the crater, which serves as the main tourist route. The Northeast Coast National Scenic Area Administration has set up a visitor center here; additionally, there is an approximately 800-meter-long military tunnel and a 180-meter-long persimmon tree trail.

Guishan Island is not open to tourism every winter to allow the island’s ecology to rest and recover, enhancing its natural beauty. After visiting Guishan Island, you might want to check out the Wushi Harbor North Jetty Harbor Bay Coastal Recreation Area, which features several kilometers of newly formed beach land—perfect for surfing, playing in the water, and paragliding. Professional surf instructors and paragliding coaches are available on-site to provide lessons, allowing you to fully enjoy a fun day by the sea. Moreover, the Waiao Service Area, a bright yellow building standing between the coastal highway and the beach, was taken over last year by the professional management of Bruno Coffee. Visitors can enjoy a drink at this stylish café while admiring views of Guishan Island, fishing boats dotting the sea, and dynamic surfing scenes.
