Fly to Japan’s music island — the Okinawa Asian Music Festival kicks off

With spring in full bloom and flowers covering the mountains and fields, a wave of music events that will get you swaying and grooving is also underway. Following A-Mei’s concert at Taipei Arena and her subsequent tour, another major event — the "International Asian Music Festival" — is taking place in March in the tropical island of Okinawa. From Naha City to Okinawa City, indoor and outdoor stages will host performances that aim to get music lovers and artists partying together.

To revitalize the music industry and promote cultural exchange among Asian countries, Okinawa, Japan is currently hosting the "Okinawa International Asian Music Festival (musix2010)." In addition to inviting well-known singers and groups from across Asia, the festival also features alternative underground bands, showcasing a diverse range of musical styles. The main event, spanning three days from March 26 to 28, will not only bring together renowned domestic and international music professionals to support the music industry but will also include an international conference called “Music Protocol” for exchanging the latest insights on music-related developments. There will also be numerous indoor and outdoor stage performances in Naha City and Okinawa City.

Outdoor stages are primarily set up along Naha City’s busiest and most vibrant street, “Kokusai Dori.” Indoor performances require tickets, featuring both Japanese and overseas renowned bands and artists. Over the three days, the streets of Naha will be filled with music, with live performances of various genres taking place on wide-ranging stages including performance bars and open-air streets.

Okinawa is known as Japan’s island of musicians, having nurtured stars such as Namie Amuro and Rimi Natsukawa. Named to reflect its vision as a “place where music (music) intersects (cross=x),” the festival brings together diverse types of music and fans, sparking new encounters and emotions. The "International Asian Music Festival" is the first large-scale music event held in Okinawa.
