Explore Kenting’s Back Garden and Experience the Beauty of Manka Terminalia Creek

The melodious tune of “Thinking of You” is a famous folk song in Hengchun’s Manka Township. On this most pristine land of Tainan Bay, besides the historical relics of early settlers developing Taiwan and a culture of ethnic integration, the area boasts rich and unique ecological landscapes, making it one of Taiwan’s most complete “natural academies.” Manka Township is also known as “Kenting’s Back Garden,” “Hometown of Eagles,” and “Taiwan’s Most Scenic Highway.” In early spring, when the Golden Birdwing Butterflies dance gracefully, come explore the mysteries of Kenting’s Back Garden together.

One-third of Manka Township is within the boundaries of Kenting National Park. Under the management of the Kenting National Park Headquarters, it features abundant natural ecological resources while preserving its distinctive cultural history and natural environment. Lidé Village in the township is a key migration route for raptors such as the Grey-faced Buzzard and the Chinese Sparrowhawk, making it a nationally renowned eagle-watching destination. Aside from the annual eagle-watching season in September and October, there is also a mysterious tropical plant paradise—“Terminalia Creek.”

The entire Hengchun Peninsula is home to 172 species of aquatic plants, ferns, and orchids, with over 40 species found in Terminalia Creek alone. This year, the Kenting National Park Headquarters has specially launched the “Manka Exploration Tour,” inviting the public to explore the hidden wonders of Terminalia Creek and delve into the natural, cultural, and ecological richness of Manka Township. Reservations for guided eco-tours of Terminalia Creek are now open. Trained guides from the local Manka community, certified by the park headquarters, will lead visitors into the valley to listen to the crisp calls of wild birds, the playful sounds of mischievous monkeys, and to admire stunning species such as the Golden Birdwing Butterfly, the endemic Glade Fern, and Taiwan’s Tiger Lily.

Terminalia Creek offers breathtaking scenery. In addition to enjoying the thrill of creek-trekking, you can observe aquatic creatures such as naiads and amphibians. Moreover, savoring local delicacies and desserts made from the Breadfruit Fig, along with appreciating the most authentic Hengchun folk songs, adds a unique flavor to your experience.
