Stroll through the Blossoms of Happiness – The Kakunodate Cherry Blossom Festival in Akita Begins

Japan’s northeastern region has a high latitude, so spring arrives later. The cherry blossoms typically bloom when temperatures rise above around 10°C. Viewing the flowers in the crisp air fills the atmosphere with the delicate fragrance of sakura. For a more distinctive and relaxing cherry blossom experience, the northeast is an excellent choice. Kakunodate, known as the “Little Kyoto” of Akita, is a popular cherry blossom destination in the region. Surrounded by serene beauty, it offers not only stunning views but also a peaceful ambiance that allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in nature.

Surrounded by mountains on three sides, Kakunodate is located in Akita Prefecture. To the east lies Hanabatake Mountain, to the north is Kojō Mountain, and to the south, the Tamagawa Ridge unfolds into the expansive Senboku Plain — making it an ideal location for building a castle town. During the Edo period, it was the largest castle town governed by the Satake Northern Clan of the Akita Domain. In 1620 (the 6th year of the Genna era), when the domain was taken over by Honda Masakatsu, it comprised 80 samurai residences and 350 merchant houses. Although only a portion of these structures remain today, they still offer a glimpse into the prosperity of that era.

Known as the “Little Kyoto,” Kakunodate, as the name suggests, boasts the classic charm of Kyoto. Its grid-like streets and simple wooden houses create the illusion of a secluded utopia, as if time has stood still since the Edo period. Every year after mid-April, the cherry blossom front moves northward and reaches Kakunodate. When the weeping cherry trees of the samurai residences and the Somei Yoshino cherries along the Hinokinai River are in full bloom, they become must-see sights for cherry blossom enthusiasts.

The weeping cherry trees and cherry blossoms along the Hinokinai River form a two-kilometer-long tunnel of blossoms, which is the main highlight of Kakunodate’s spring flower viewing. Weeping cherries and Somei Yoshino varieties dominate the landscape. Cherry trees transplanted from Kyoto soften the solemn atmosphere of the historic samurai town, adding a touch of imperial elegance. During the Kakunodate Cherry Blossom Festival from mid-April to early May, visitors flock to the area to celebrate the season, making Kakunodate Station bustling with energy.
