Kurashiki Haru Matsuri (Spring Festival) in Okayama – A Cultural Journey Through the Feudal Domain
Okayama Prefecture, known as the "City of Sunny Skies," is famous not only as the hometown of Momotaro but also for its Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, a picturesque area filled with Western-style architecture and charming canals. The district preserves traditional buildings along the riverbanks and offers scenic streetscapes that exude a leisurely Japanese atmosphere. Although the pink cherry blossom festival has just ended its peak season, the lively "Haru Matsuri" (Spring Festival) is about to begin, adding even more festive cheer to the Bikan area of Kurashiki.

During the Edo period, Kurashiki in Okayama was a “tenryō” (Heavenly Domain), directly governed by the shogun. Under shogunate protection, it became a hub for distributing abundant goods. In modern times, numerous Western-style buildings and art museums have been built here, and 88 willow trees planted along the river have added to the artistic charm of Kurashiki Bikan. Strolling through the well-preserved merchant streets offers visitors a glimpse into the past, while Kurashiki River, flowing through the center, is often dotted with gently floating boats. With the breeze rustling the willows, it’s like stepping into a painting.
Held annually during Golden Week (May 2–4), the Kurashiki Haru Matsuri centers around the Bikan area and features parades, concerts, traditional performances, and boat cruises. Along the historic streets, shops busily make the local famous wagashi (traditional sweets) “Orasuzume.” For those seeking a taste of Momotaro’s playful spirit, Hiroeidō, which once served Kibi Dango (sweet rice dumplings) to Emperor Meiji, offers the traditional simple flavor. The shop also features adorable and charming packaging specially designed by an artist, making it a great souvenir to bring home.

When attending the Kurashiki Haru Matsuri, besides exploring on foot, another delightful way to enjoy the poetic beauty of Bikan is by taking a rickshaw ride. The rickshaws in Kurashiki Bikan are the second oldest in Japan. As you ride, the rickshaw pullers run diligently while providing detailed commentary about the Kurashiki area – a thoughtful and immersive experience.
