The year 2010 marked the 120th anniversary of Van Gogh's death

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, houses over 200 of Van Gogh’s oil paintings, 580 sketches, and 750 personal letters, as well as works by his friends and some contemporary artists. It is the museum with the largest collection of Van Gogh’s works. Although the museum is relatively young, it has been collecting Van Gogh’s works for quite some time. The museum was designed by the De Stijl architect Gerrit Rietveld and is a three-story building. In 1999, a new exhibition hall was added, designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, featuring a semi-circular structure with 19th-century artistic style.

France has always been the homeland of inspiration for artists, and Van Gogh, who began his creative journey, also moved to France. Arles in the Provence region of southern France was a source of inspiration and a paradise for Van Gogh’s paintings. Visiting this city, you’ll find traces of Van Gogh everywhere, as the city is filled with legendary stories because of him. In 1888, Van Gogh came to Arles, where this sunlit and vibrant village inspired his desire to create.

Arles is filled with a strong artistic atmosphere

The most brilliant and prolific period of Van Gogh’s work was during his stay in Arles in the south of France. Among his most famous works from this time is “Starry Night Over the Rhône,” an extraordinary masterpiece from this period. Attractions such as the Arles Hospital, Arles Park, the Van Gogh Memorial Gallery, and the Van Gogh Café all reflect his influence. For Van Gogh enthusiasts, this artistic town is not to be missed!

In 1890, the ailing artist Van Gogh went to Auvers to seek treatment from Dr. Gachet, where he later took his own life. During the two months he spent in Auvers, it was the climax of Van Gogh’s life. He painted over 80 works at an astonishing rate of more than one per day, including many iconic pieces such as “Portrait of Dr. Gachet,” “The Church at Auvers,” and “Wheatfield with Crows.”
