The nine selected participants of the fifth edition of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre’s “Wanderer Project” have all returned home, bringing back a wealth of experiences and emotions from their journeys. Over the past six years, the “Wanderer Project” has received more than 1,100 applications, among which 53 wanderers were selected, and 44 have completed their journeys. This year, the farthest journey took them to Damascus, the highest peak scaled was over 5,000 meters in the Himalayas, and a 10-month trip across Indochina broke the record for the longest wandering period.

Continuing the socially engaged spirit of the previous edition, this year’s wanderers also focused on various humanitarian concerns. Cui Suxin participated in the anti-nuclear movement in Japan; Cai Yongqing shot a documentary tracing the roots of exiled Tibetans; Yang Yunsheng experienced life as a homeless person in Japan; Lin Yihua, who promotes mountain education in Taiwan, successfully summited the Himalayas; Chen Naiqi’s journey lasted an impressive 10 months as she participated in disease prevention and health education work across Indochina.

Beyond interactions between humans and the environment, this year’s project also returned to the essence of “self-exploration” during the wandering. Chen Yihua searched for traces of historical literati among old bookstalls in China; Lu Ping traveled to Damascus to explore the landscapes seen through poets’ eyes; theater director Shi Donglin went to India to study yoga and sitar; and documentary filmmaker Qu Xiaowei started with her grandmother’s recipes and retraced the route her grandmother took when fleeing from mainland China to Taiwan, rediscovering the flavors of her ancestral home in every dish.

The “Wanderer Project” aims to encourage young people to step out of Taiwan, engage directly with local communities, and enrich their personal experiences. Applications for the 2011 “Wanderer Project” are now open until July 15. Those under 45 years of age who are passionate about creative pursuits or social service are welcome to apply. Application guidelines and forms can be downloaded from the Cloud Gate website: www.cloudgate.org.tw, or you may contact Cloud Gate Dance Theatre at 02-2712-2102.
