Land Boats in Motion: Explore Kaohsiung by Amphibious Sightseeing Bus

Amphibious vehicles are also known as “duck boats” because they can navigate both water and road, earning their name for being as versatile as ducks. Their history dates back to amphibious troop carriers used during World War II, which were later repurposed as tourist buses after the war. Today, over 30 riverside and harbor cities around the world have adopted amphibious vehicles to promote urban tourism. Kaohsiung is the first city in Taiwan to introduce them. The city’s picturesque waterfront scenery, connected by the amphibious sightseeing bus, makes for an incredibly romantic travel experience.

The route of Kaohsiung’s amphibious sightseeing bus starts at the Taiwan Railways New Zuoying Station, travels to Lotus Pond where it circles the area, and then returns to the Taiwan Railways New Zuoying Station. The first promotional period runs until the end of 2010, with regular fares at NT$120 for adults and NT$60 for children; for residents of Kaohsiung City and County, the adult fare is NT$80 and the child fare is NT$40. Scheduled services operate from 12:00 to 17:00 every Tuesday to Sunday, with additional chartered services available by reservation. Each trip is accompanied by a friendly guide who provides insights into this harbor city that blends water, light, and art.
