The Tainan Qixi 16th Birthday Arts Festival has entered its ninth year and will be held from August 13 to 15 at the Confucius Temple Cultural Zone in Tainan City and surrounding attractions, featuring lively performances and activities. Join the YOUTH Play & Create Camp, where 16-year-olds can engage with international arts and cultural groups through camp activities, making this coming-of-age milestone even more memorable.

The "Coming of Age at 16" ceremony is a tradition in Tainan that dates back over 300 years. In the early days, many child laborers were employed in Tainan, and turning 16 meant they could earn full wages. Therefore, 16 was a significant milestone for these youths—not only marking their growth but also officially announcing to family and friends that they were ready to take on family and social responsibilities. This year’s 16th Birthday Arts Festival invites teenagers from around the world to Tainan to celebrate turning 16 and promote this unique Taiwanese culture.

The 16th Birthday Arts Festival features a total of 14 main events, including “Back to 16 – YOUTH Play & Create Camp,” “Family Coming-of-Age Ceremony: Rituals Made Fun,” “Taiwan’s True Youth: 16-Year-Old Camp,” “Step Forward at 16: Bicycle Tour Around Taiwan,” “i-Creativity: Tainan Daughters’ Festival,” “Tainan, Kyoto, Sendai, Guangzhou – International Qixi Exchange Exhibition,” “The Birth of the Seventh Fairy Mother: Coming-of-Age Ritual Exhibition for 16-Year-Olds,” “Dance & Drama Galore – International Grand Performance,” “Starting from Love, Dressed to Impress,” “Qixi Adventure: Pass Six Challenges,” “16-Year-Old Creative Market,” “16-Year-Old Theater,” “Online Connection & Lucky Draw,” “16-Year-Old Hope Map.” The “International Grand Performance” invites eight international groups to Taiwan to compete with local teams, offering the public a unique cultural feast.
In addition to performances, the festival also incorporates the charity event “Starting from Love, Dressed to Impress,” featuring the sale of themed T-shirts. The design is inspired by the equation 16 = 8 + 8 = ∞ + ∞ = infinity, symbolizing the limitless possibilities of being 16. All proceeds will be donated to the Huashan Foundation to contribute to a good cause.
