Traditional aesthetic of life, 2010 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival
What was life like in the past? How do the daily objects, cultures, and arts of different ethnic groups around the world vary? The “2010 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival” will grandly kick off at the National Center for Traditional Arts starting October 2nd, presenting a nine-day North Asian cultural feast. Meanwhile, the thoughtfully curated special exhibition “2010 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival Special Exhibition—Life 'Aesthetics' Tradition” will run until December 12th. Through a series of cultural performances, craft displays, and other exchange activities, visitors can explore the traditional cultures of North Asian countries and peoples, and gain an understanding of their diverse cultural meanings.
The “Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival” will take place from October 2nd to October 10th, themed “North Asian Charm.” It invites performing troupes and artisans from faraway North Asian regions that roam the grasslands and tundras—including Mongolia, Russia, the Sakha Republic, Buryatia, and the Tuva Republic—to perform in Taiwan. From language, ethnicity, history, and culture to music, dance, and traditional crafts, the festival offers captivating performances that provide locals with a refreshing cultural experience.
Meanwhile, the “2010 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival Special Exhibition—Life 'Aesthetics' Tradition” centers on the daily utensils of ethnic groups across the Asia-Pacific region, featuring two exhibition areas: “Dialogue: Ingenuity and Aesthetics” and “Metamorphosis: From Reverence to Innovation.” The “Ingenuity and Aesthetics” section showcases various utensils made from rattan and bamboo weaving, as well as wooden carvings depicting ancestral spirits for worship, and depictions of deities engraved on animal hides, revealing a deeply moving cultural heritage. The “From Reverence to Innovation” section illustrates how, with historical progression, different techniques have evolved—from the arrangement and weaving of fiber materials to dyeing, fabric-making, and the sewing of elaborate garments. Textiles woven in Southeast Asia are considered sacred items, used in lifecycle ceremonies and events such as childbirth, coming-of-age rites, and weddings, often serving as gifts. These fabrics also incorporate images of deities, acting as intermediaries between the physical world and the realm of ancestors.
The “2010 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival” and the “2010 Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival Special Exhibition—Life 'Aesthetics' Tradition” will be lively presented at the National Center for Traditional Arts, spanning cultures from China, India, and Indonesia. The public is welcome to visit.
