The Tainan City Government, now in its fourth consecutive year of hosting the highly acclaimed Souvenir Selection Event, has begun accepting applications for the “2011 Top Ten Tainan Souvenirs and Traditional Delicacies.” Applications will be accepted until November 18. Local food and souvenir businesses in Tainan are encouraged to apply. Interested vendors may complete the application form and attach product photos, health certification documents or relevant food inspection qualification certificates, as well as a photocopy of their business registration license. Each vendor may submit only one product per category. Chain vendors may register through a single outlet. Both traditional delicacies and souvenirs must first pass a preliminary review, after which the top 20 from each category will proceed to an online vote and exhibition sale before entering the second phase of physical product and live cooking evaluation. The final selection of the “2011 Top Ten Tainan Souvenirs and Traditional Delicacies” will be based on a combined score — 85% from the second-phase judging and 15% from the public vote — with winners receiving year-round promotional and marketing support.

The “2011 Top Ten Tainan Souvenirs and Traditional Delicacies” selection is divided into two categories: Traditional Delicacies (must be cookable on-site, such as oyster omelet, rice cake, and zongzi), and Souvenirs (such as pastries, puddings, dried meats, etc., which must be fully packaged and easy to carry). All items in this selection are edible products — no artisanal or souvenir merchandise is included — ensuring the focus remains purely on food. This approach avoids unfair evaluation discrepancies due to differing product types, which have previously led to many artisanal souvenirs being left off the list year after year, thus preventing fair competition. Future separate selection events will be held for creative cultural merchandise souvenirs. Furthermore, to give more food businesses the chance to receive guidance, those already listed as Tainan Gourmet Selections or those that have been selected for three consecutive years (including the current year) as souvenirs or traditional delicacies are not eligible for this selection.
