Special Exhibition on Contemporary Indian Art: Discover the Beauty of India

The exhibition will invite 29 artists active on the international art scene from the 1950s to the 1980s to collectively interpret “The Indian Way” through 63 artworks in various media. The works include installations, paintings, videos, sculptures, and photography, exploring the contradictions within this ancient society in the modern age, the dreams and aspirations of its people, and covering diverse cultural aspects such as music, literature, and Bollywood films.

At the entrance of the exhibition, Valay Shende presents a provocative female sculpture standing on a threshold, attempting to lure visitors into a dimly lit room. The shimmering coin decorations recreate the typical red-light district of Mumbai and the underlying theme of women’s forced exploitation. Thukral & Tagra’s “Pigeons” features a series of close-up portraits of young men, depicting their journeys abroad in search of a better life, thereby commenting on the rapid rise of India’s middle class and the influx of mass consumer culture. Rashmi Kaleka documents the resilience of street vendors in harsh environments. Navin Rawanchaikul presents “Bollywood Naam,” chronicling his journey of tracing roots from Thailand to India, filled with musical segments and dramatic tension that vividly showcase the style of Indian Bollywood.
