The Chiayi to Fenchihu section of the Alishan Forest Railway, which was severely damaged by Typhoon Morakot last year, is scheduled to resume operations in March 2011. As for the Fenchihu to Alishan Forest Recreation Area section, an engineering consulting firm has been commissioned to conduct an assessment, and a reconstruction plan will be formulated based on the assessment results.

Although the Zhushan and Shenmu sections of the Alishan Forest Railway resumed operations in mid-June, the timeline for the full line's restoration has remained a concern for the public. On the 22nd, Yu Cheng-da, Speaker of the Chiayi County Council during its 17th regular second session, also expressed concern over the progress of repairs and the resumption schedule. According to information obtained by the Chiayi County Tourism Bureau in coordination with the Chiayi Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau, efforts to repair the Chiayi to Fenchihu section are being accelerated, with resumption scheduled for the end of March 2011. For the Fenchihu to Alishan Forest Recreation Area section, the Chung-shin Engineering Consultants has been commissioned to carry out an assessment, with the final report expected to be completed in the near future. A follow-up reconstruction plan and relevant timeline will be developed based on the assessment results.

The Alishan Forest Railway is one of only three remaining high-altitude railways in the world. The entire line passes through 49 tunnels, 77 bridges, and 21 stations. With its 3-forward-and-3-reverse Z-shaped sections and spiral mountain-climbing tracks, the railway ascends from Chiayi City at 30 meters above sea level to Alishan at 2,216 meters. Along the journey, visitors can observe changes in plant species across three forest zones—tropical, subtropical, and temperate—as well as enjoy the beautiful landscapes of mountains and valleys. Its unique terrain, engineering methods, and complete forest composition make it not only a treasure of Taiwan but also one of the world’s most important cultural assets.
