It has been nearly a year since the Sun Moon Lake Gondola opened at the end of last year. By providing a fresh view and angle of the lake, it has quickly turned into one of Taiwan’s hottest highlights. According to the Sun Moon Lake Gondola Company, which manages its operations, after hitting the one-million mark in April this year, the cumulative number of visitors—including those entering via Nine Tribes Cultural Village and taking the gondola, as well as those starting directly from the Sun Moon Lake Gondola Station—had reached over 2.9 million by mid-November, nearing the 3 million mark. It is estimated that by early December, the total number of paid riders will hit the historic 3 million milestone.

Achieving 3 million riders in just one year is a remarkable feat for Sun Moon Lake, the gondola company, Nine Tribes Cultural Village, and the surrounding tourism industry. It seems Sun Moon Lake no longer has an off-season. To celebrate the upcoming 3 millionth rider, Nine Tribes Cultural Village will present special commemorative gifts, including free admission, to the 3 millionth, 2,999,999th, and 3,000,001st lucky riders. Local hotels around Sun Moon Lake are also joining in the celebration by offering free accommodation vouchers. The 3 millionth lucky rider will receive a Golden Passport granting lifetime free admission to both Nine Tribes Cultural Village and the Sun Moon Lake Gondola, a lake-view suite double occupancy stay worth NT$15,500 sponsored by Sun Moon Lake’s Hotel Indigo (The Lalu), and a Sun Moon Lake Gondola model piggy bank among other great giveaways. Meanwhile, the 2,999,999th and 3,000,001st lucky passengers will each receive a one-year Golden Passport for free entry to Nine Tribes Cultural Village and the gondola, along with a weekday lake-view or Western-style room stay worth NT$12,320 at The Lalu Ming Yue Tower from Yun Pin Hotel, or a weekday lake-view room worth NT$8,800 at The Grand Park Hotel.
