Winter Bamboo Shoot Season in 2010: Hiking and Feasting in Zhushan

This area boasts a beautiful natural environment and is known as the hometown of bamboo. Its bamboo crafts and winter bamboo shoots are especially famous. The annual Winter Bamboo Shoot Festival is always packed to capacity. For just NT$300, you can sign up for a package that includes one-day transportation, a guided tour of the bamboo forest trails, souvenirs, and a “bamboo shoot feast”—but only non-local visitors are eligible to join.

The annual Winter Bamboo Shoot Festival will kick off on Saturday, December 11, 2010. The event features guided tours of the Da’an Bamboo Sea and Wanggaoliao Ecological Trail, a bamboo shoot feast accompanied by music, bamboo craft and stone carving challenges with souvenir giveaways, an introduction to bamboo sword craftsmanship, an exhibition on umbrella culture at the Umbrella Pavilion, and guided tours of Zinan Temple and Sheliao area.

The event has a limit of 320 participants. To register, please contact the Zhushan Visitor Center at 049-2657668. (Participants will be covered by NT$2 million travel insurance and NT$1 million public accident insurance.) Additionally, each group of 20 people will receive a full guided tour, and vegetarian options are not available. Those unable to join the entire itinerary are advised not to sign up.
