The 4th Ginowan GUSUKU Cherry Blossom Festival will be held on January 21 this year. The opening ceremony of the event is scheduled to take place from 6:00 PM to 6:40 PM on Friday, January 21, 2011, and will be moved indoors to the GUSUKU Exchange Center in case of rain. Those who want to see cherry blossoms during the Lunar New Year holiday should plan ahead.
Ginowan Castle Ruins is a famous World Heritage Site and has become a popular cherry blossom viewing spot.
This year's lighting time is from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The event schedule is as follows: January 29 (Sat), Ginowan Village Tokishin Youth Association 16:00–18:00; January 30 (Sun), Ginowan Village Nakazato Youth Association 16:00–18:00; February 5 (Sat), Ginowan Village Tengawa Youth Association 16:00–18:00; February 6 (Sun), Ginowan Village Waka River Youth Association 16:00–18:00.

Ginowan Castle Ruins was a stronghold of Northern Shuri during the Ryukyu Sanzan period and, along with 8 other heritage sites in Okinawa Prefecture, has been registered as a World Heritage Site. Also known as Northern Mountain Castle, Ginowan Castle was built around the 13th century. The shrine of the fire god is scattered throughout the castle, and the residence of the priestess “Noro,” who oversaw the rituals, always occupied a central location within the castle. Many people still come here to worship. Nowadays, Ginowan Castle is a famous cherry blossom viewing destination. The old stone steps are lined with winter cherry blossoms that bloom from mid-January to early February, bathing the mountains and the ancient castle in a sea of pale pink flowers, highlighting the gentle charm of the historic site.
