The annual Lunar New Year tradition of “lucky bags” across Taiwan has department stores competing with luxurious giveaways and creative promotions. As always, crowds of people, undeterred by the cold, line up after their New Year’s Eve dinners to grab these bags—sometimes with the whole family in tow—hoping to kick off the new year with good fortune and take home prizes like cars or diamonds. This year, aside from the usual big prizes, some retailers have come up with unique offerings, such as “Beauty Lucky Bags” and “Experience-Based Lucky Bags” tailored for women, as well as supermarket holiday gift bundles, making it even harder for shoppers to decide which store to queue at.

Hankyu Department Store, joining the lucky bag scene for the first time this year, is featuring a limited-edition “Beauty Lucky Bag” (500 available, priced at NT$1,688 each, with a value over NT$3,000). These include beauty products like SK-II face masks, L’Occitane hand cream or Kiehl’s lip balm, My Healthy Diary slimming tea flower tablets, and Health Brightberry drinks, along with chances to win random prizes such as a Smart car, a Sony 3D TV, or a W HOTEL stay. Additionally, they’ve introduced Japan’s “Experience-Based Lucky Bags,” including a “Food ALL PASS” experience that allows a full day of gourmet indulgence at in-store restaurants and food stalls, complete with two personal food concierges. The “Beauty ALL PASS” experience offers expert beauty transformation consultations, creating fresh buzz around Lunar New Year lucky bags.

Other stores also giving away cars as grand prizes include Kaohsiung Hanshin Dome, Far Eastern Department Store, and Core Pacific City. At Kaohsiung Hanshin Dome, lucky bags are unlimited, going on sale at 10:30 AM on New Year’s Day. For NT$100, you get a bag with a NT$100 voucher and a chance to win a Yulon Tobe car. Far Eastern’s Taoyuan branch offers a chance to win a Tobe Cubic automatic car worth NT$400,000 for NT$1,688, while its Kaohsiung branch lets you try for a Hyundai Matrix 1.6 car worth NT$550,000 plus Swiss and Tissot watches for NT$2,000. Baoqing and Banqiao branches offer NT$100,000 in gift vouchers and NT$201,100 in bonus coupons. Meanwhile, Core Pacific City’s 3,000 lucky bags this year can be purchased through various channels—online pre-sale, in-store pre-order, or queuing—with the grand prize being a Mitsubishi Colt Plus.

Shin Kong Mitsukoshi branches across Taiwan are offering a total of 7,500 lucky bags, each priced at NT$1,000 and containing items worth over NT$3,000. Along with popular sleep-enhancing mattresses, pillows, and OSIM massage chairs available province-wide, the Xinyi branch features diamond jewelry worth NT$600,000 (1 carat), while the Nanshi branch includes diamond pendants worth NT$310,000, KYMCO scooters, Galaxy Tabs, iPads, and more. Momoshop is also joining the fray for the first time this year, starting its lucky bag sales early on January 28. Limited to 300 NT$100 bags, the top prize is a Yamaha NEW CUXi scooter. Miramar’s first-ever kids’ lucky bags are priced at NT$100 each, containing toy vouchers, snack/dessert coupons, Wii game consoles, and more, with the top prize being a supermarket holiday gift bundle.

Taipei Main Station’s Fashion Mall is offering both NT$999 and NT$10,000 lucky bags. The NT$999 version (399 available) goes on sale starting February 3 (Thursday), with top prizes including an iPad, LCD TV, HTC smartphone, a stay at Beitou Kagaya, and a TOKUYO premium massage chair. The “Century Good Box” lucky bag is priced at NT$10,000, went on sale January 10, and will have a Peugeot 107 car drawn as the grand prize on February 14. Finally, Breeze Center’s NT$1,000 lucky bags are available for pre-order starting January 20 (for those who spend NT$3,000 in-store), with top prizes such as a 1-carat diamond (NT$200,000), a custom-designed dress by a designer, and a celebrity chef cooking a meal at your home.
