Collect moments full of happiness as the Sanzhi Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off

February to March marks the beginning of the beautiful flowering season, with various types of flowers blooming across Taiwan. In the northern regions, cherry blossoms are a must-see attraction every year. Areas such as Sanzhi, Tamsui, Wulai, Pingxi, Jinshan, and Shiding are all home to cherry blossoms, but the most grandiose “2011 Sanzhi Cherry Blossom Festival – Love in Sanzhi” has been warmly welcomed by the public over the years. Strolling through the sea of pink trees creates a uniquely romantic atmosphere.

The cherry blossom varieties in Sanzhi currently include mountain cherry, Yoshino cherry, and double-flowered cherry, with a total of over 15,000 trees. When in full bloom, the blossoms can be seen along both sides of “Dahu Road” and “Qingshan Road,” at “Yuanshan Summit,” “Zhibai Villa,” “Xinghua Elementary School,” and various leisure farms. The varieties come in red, pink, and white. Most of the cherry blossoms in Sanzhi are native Taiwanese “Festive Cherries,” also commonly known as “mountain cherries.” Their petals are a deep, intense red and are among the most vividly colored of all the varieties. Their peak blooming period is in February.

During the Sanzhi Cherry Blossom Festival, local businesses roll out a variety of cherry blossom-themed treats. A special “Bunny Reunion” event is held during the festival—just gather 10 friends born in the Year of the Rabbit and you could enjoy a complimentary cherry blossom meal worth NT$3,000. There are 10 such tables available, on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, on February 13th, just before Valentine’s Day, a “Planting Love Saplings” event will take place in the “Cherry Blossom Waterwheel Park,” where 50 couples will be invited to plant cherry blossom saplings symbolizing romance. There will also be a “Love in Sanzhi” photography competition, with the top prize being NT$10,000. Furthermore, 4,000 cherry blossom souvenir photo frames will be given out for free at the Sanzhi Celebrity and Cultural Relics Museum over the course of four weekends in February (a total of 8 days), with 500 available each day until supplies run out.
