During the 100th year’s Spring Festival, due to economic recovery and mild weather, visitor numbers at tourist and recreational areas increased significantly compared to last year. The Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications estimated that over the five-day Spring Festival holiday (from the first to the fifth day of the Lunar New Year), the total number of travelers reached 8,961,187, an increase of approximately 32.17% compared to the same period (99th year) last year; this also represented a growth of 32.46% compared to the 6,765,205 visitors during the similarly five-day 97th year holiday. Additionally, according to the Tourism Bureau, during this year’s Spring Festival holiday (first to fifth day), a total of about 1,043 tour groups and approximately 24,609 mainland Chinese tourists visited Taiwan.
During the Spring Festival, Sun Moon Lake also saw record-high visitor numbers due to favorable weather.
In addition to the Taipei International Flora Expo, other major exhibitions and events during this year’s Spring Festival — such as the Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tale Exhibition held by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the Chocolate Exhibition hosted by the National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung — drew continuous crowds. Other events like “2011 Flowers in Changhua,” “2011 Sun Moon Lake Nine Tribes Cherry Blossom Festival,” and “2011 Meinong Colorful Earth – Cosmos Flower Sea” collectively attracted nearly 2 million visitors.
Across Taiwan’s 24 tourist and recreational venues during the Spring Festival (from the first to the fifth day of the Lunar New Year), the total number of visitors was approximately 600,000, a 20.27% increase compared to the same period last year (first to fifth day), with total revenue reaching around NT$330 million, a 13.95% increase year-on-year. The top five most visited attractions were Leofoo Village Theme Park, Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, Janfusun Fancyworld, Miniature Land Theme Park, and Lihpao Land.
The Tainan 88 Anping Line had an occupancy rate of over 90%; pictured is the famous Yide Jincheng in Tainan’s Anping District.
During this (100th year) Spring Festival, the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications coordinated the operation of 11 shuttle bus routes serving tourist and recreational sites. Aside from the newly launched Guanziling Line, which had relatively low ridership due to insufficient promotion, and the Taroko Scenic Shuttle, which saw lower occupancy due to reduced visitor volume in the eastern region, other shuttle services — including the Alishan Shizhu–Fenchihu Line, Forest Recreation Area Line, Sun Moon Lake Loop Line, and Shishan Quanhua Hall Line — had average occupancy rates of nearly 70%. The Ruifang Station–Jinjiu Line and others had average occupancy rates of over 90%. Additionally, 12 new “Taiwan Good to Go” shuttle bus lines were launched for the first time this Spring Festival. According to statistics, the Tainan 88 Anping Line and the 99 Taijiang Line had occupancy rates of over 90%, while the Taichung Xitou Line, Taitung Coastal Urban Line, High-Speed Rail Kenting Express, and Taichung Sun Moon Lake Line also achieved over 50% occupancy.
