Among tourists visiting Japan, some might think “Japan is expensive!” Depending on one’s financial situation, that’s certainly an understandable feeling. But in reality, if you visit during one of Japan’s several annual discount sales periods, shopping becomes very affordable, allowing you to enjoy it to the fullest.

Therefore, this time we’ll introduce when Japan’s discount seasons are and what kinds of items go on sale. By the way, for those who love shopping, I highly recommend January, August, and December as the most worthwhile times. Why? Find out in the following article!

New Year Discounts – January

The start of the new year also marks the beginning of the discount season. Since many stores in Japan are closed between December 31 and January 2 or 3, the discount period kicks off after the New Year holidays. This is when winter clothing goes on big sale. Also, don’t miss Japan’s “fukubukuro” (lucky bags), which go on sale at the start of the year. Be sure to give them a try — it’s a great opportunity to purchase your favorite brands at prices lower than usual.

So January is a joyful shopping season with cheap winter wear and fukubukuro.

Winter Clearance – February

February is still quite cold, but by this time Japan starts selling spring clothing. Also, any winter items you wanted but found a bit too pricey can get even cheaper in February. However, compared to January, there are fewer winter items left, so keep that in mind.

New Life Discounts – March to April

Japanese students begin their new semester in April. In both schools and companies across Japan, April is widely considered the start of the new year (with some exceptions). As a result, starting in March, there are discounts targeting students and recent graduates. During this period, you can find deals on electronics, furniture, suits, bags, and more. Some stores even offer discounts on stationery and other miscellaneous goods. Oh, and Japanese stationery excels in both function and design — be sure to give it a try.

Summer Discounts – July to August

In early summer, around June, most stores haven’t started discounting yet. But by July, shops gradually begin offering discounts on summer clothing.

Then, the best time to snag stylish summer items at the most affordable prices is August. Japan’s summers are hot and humid, so take advantage of the slightly cooler summer discount period to pick up some summer fashion or seasonal goods.

Final Summer Clearance – September

Once September arrives, the sweltering heat in Japan begins to ease somewhat. By this time, many summer items have already sold out after the summer sales, but some stores continue discounting and clearing out remaining summer stock.

Autumn Discounts – September

As daylight shortens and the air turns cooler in November, autumn discounts let you shop for fall and winter clothes or items you can wear well into early spring. However, not many stores participate, and the discounts aren’t as deep.

Winter & Year-End Discounts – December

As the year draws to a close, the streets are adorned with colorful lights and filled with Christmas carols, creating an atmosphere quite different from the usual. During the December discount season, winter clothing is naturally discounted, and even household appliances and other items go on sale—making it a great time for shopping.

During the “While Supplies Last” end-of-year discount season, not only clothing but also a wide range of items such as home appliances and home decor accessories are discounted. Many stores begin their discounts before Christmas, so don’t miss out on these deals.

Only a small number of stores offer slight discounts during periods other than those mentioned above.

Golden Week Discount Period – Late April to Early May

Golden Week (or GW for short), a consecutive holiday period in Japan, sees some stores offering discounts from just before Golden Week through to its end, though the discounts aren't very significant.

Halloween Discounts – October

In recent years (as of 2016), Japan’s Halloween celebrations have gained worldwide fame. Though not many stores participate, some offer discounts on candy or cosplay costumes.
