New Taipei City’s new landmark, the Sky Lantern International Tourism Hotel

Following the great international success of Taiwan’s Pavilion, which featured a sky lantern theme at the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the New Taipei City Department of Economic Development began planning an international-grade tourism hotel designed in the shape of a “blessing sky lantern.” The hotel is to be located in the Xinzhuang Xinzhuang Special Zone in Banqiao, with completion scheduled for 2013 (the 102nd year of the Republic of China), and is set to become a new landmark tourist attraction in New Taipei City.

This international tourism hotel, shaped like a sky lantern, stands 39 stories tall, with the lantern body situated between the 28th and 39th floors, reaching a height of approximately 26 meters. Large LED screens surround the exterior of the lantern, allowing the color of the lantern to change with the seasons and even display video content. During special holidays, blessings and lucky phrases can be projected onto it. On the highlight event of the year — the Lantern Festival — live footage of Pingxi sky lanterns ascending into the sky can be broadcast simultaneously, allowing citizens to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

According to Jiang Jun-ting, Director of the New Taipei City Department of Economic Development, the choice of a sky lantern as the theme for this international tourism hotel is intended to integrate local culture from New Taipei City. The main body of the lantern was designed by renowned architect Li Tsu-yuan, with an estimated construction cost of around NT$100 million. The interior will be planned as a welcome hall, featuring various facilities such as restaurants, swimming pools, spas, and fitness centers. From high above, visitors can enjoy stunning views, and it is expected to attract a large number of tourists for stays.
