The Thai New Year is the country’s most grand celebration, with a three-day national holiday. Some cities even hold multi-day festivities, but the highlight — the Songkran Festival — is the most popular event among tourists from around the world. In Thailand’s Buddhist tradition, washing hands with water is a solemn ritual, but it has now evolved into a carnival of water fights and playful splashing. Water guns and buckets come into full use during Songkran, and locals also rub powder on each other’s faces as a blessing.

During the Songkran Festival (April 13–15, 2011), Thailand is at its liveliest. Silom Road and Khao San Road are closed to vehicles and become pedestrian zones. Small restaurants close for the three days, while major malls remain open. The beach resort city of Pattaya, about a 90-minute drive from Bangkok, extends its water activities for a whole week. In Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, Buddhists hold prayer processions in the city, while people engage in “water battles” along the ancient moat.

Those planning to join the Songkran celebrations should wear light, quick-drying clothing and keep their electronics in sealed bags.
