The Taipei City Government’s series of events “Delicious Night Markets, Hundredfold Joy for You” kicks off with a campaign to collect names for night markets. Whether the names are similar or homophonic in Mandarin or Taiwanese, just submit an ID document along with a short essay for a chance to win night market vouchers.

The “night market,” filled with traditional Taiwanese cuisine and local charm, offers a more exciting experience for eating, drinking, playing, and shopping. Not only is it a daily consumption spot for Taipei residents, but it is also one of the must-visit destinations for both domestic and international tourists when they come to the city. Starting April 11, 2011, the Taipei City Government officially launched its first joint promotional campaign for famous night markets in Taipei, themed around “Life in Taipei” and “Fantastic 100.” This includes a campaign to collect auspicious names related to night markets and a series of promotional events at seven major night markets (Raohe Street Night Market, Qingguang Market, Shuangcheng Night Market, Xichang, Wuzhou, Guangzhou, and Huaxi Street Night Market), aiming to attract both domestic and international visitors, highlight the image of Taipei’s night markets, and boost surrounding business opportunities.

The “Auspicious Night Market Names Collection Campaign” aims to gather 10 participants whose names are homophonic or similar to “night market” in Mandarin or Taiwanese, or whose names match or sound like those of the seven featured night markets—such as Ye Shihao, Lin Yaqi, Huang Raohe, Liu Shuangcheng, Zheng Huaxi, etc. The collection period runs from April 11, 2011, to April 29, 2011. Registration forms can be downloaded from the official campaign website, and entries are submitted via mail. Applicants must attach a copy of their ID and a short essay of no more than 200 words on “My Favorite Night Market” or “An Interesting Story About My Name.” The selected list will be announced on the official website on May 2. The 10 successful applicants will receive NT$1,000 in night market vouchers and will be invited to attend the promotional press conference for Taipei’s 2011 night market vendor hub events. At that time, the centennial mascot—Rocky Baby—will also perform a lively night market dance to kick off this year’s night market activities.
