In Shanghai’s Tianzifang area, “Dan” Coffee may not be large, but it is exquisitely designed with a cozy atmosphere, fully embodying the essence of a “handmade café.” From coffee roasting to cakes and cuisine, every detail is handled with care and precision. Tianzifang is made up of many narrow lanes and is home to art galleries, small restaurants, and specialty shops. Opened in 2007, “Dan” is not only a café and a coffee roasting workshop but also a restaurant serving refined and healthy cuisine. Though it’s not the easiest place to find, its classic Chinese decor, wooden signboard, and steep staircase are sure to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

Regular customers often prefer to sit at the bar near the entrance, where they can watch the master brew coffee. Every step, from roasting and temperature control to filtration, is meticulously managed. The Japanese owner, Takayuki Unigaya, decided to settle here after marrying his Shanghai-born wife, dedicating himself to his passion for coffee roasting. He sources beans from 25 countries including Colombia, Brazil, Jamaica, Yemen, and Tanzania, and with the high standards of a Japanese craftsman, he hand-brews each cup to rich perfection.

After climbing the steep wooden staircase, the second floor has only a few tables, perfect for a small group of friends to dine and chat.
