One-Day Tour in Hualien (8): From Niushan Huting to the Tropic of Cancer Recreation Area :: Fengbin

The entrance to Niushan Huting along the coastal highway has a small driftwood sign. Continue downhill to arrive. The area features expansive undulating green fields — in the Amis language, it means “a place to graze cattle,” creating an almost utopian atmosphere. You can rest on wooden chairs, explore the art space built from driftwood, enjoy the coastal scenery from the Dream Platform, or savor authentic Amis cuisine.

Yuandong (Moon Cave) is located 80 meters above sea level inside a mountainside. It is a naturally formed cave where the water level of the spring inside changes with the phases of the moon — hence its name. Visitors must take a boat ride with a guide and rely on lighting to see special cave formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, fish head fossils, swiftlet nests, bat colonies, and underground streams.

Shipitiping has been eroded by ocean tides over time, forming rich coastal erosion landscapes such as sea trenches, sea cliffs, and potholes, including a rare 1-kilometer-long wave-cut platform. The abundant coral reefs host diverse marine life, making it a great spot for fishing. The East Coast National Scenic Area Administration has also set up a visitor center here, featuring scenic stone-viewing trails and well-equipped camping facilities.

Changhong Bridge is Taiwan’s first cantilevered single-arch prestressed concrete bridge, stretching 120 meters. From afar, it looks like a red dragon. When going rafting on the Xiuguluan River, seeing this bridge means you’ve reached the end point. The bridge is not only an excellent birdwatching spot but also offers a distant view of the Xiuguluan River and the scenic beauty of “Xiuguluan Cascading Jade.”

Baqi Overlook is a rare elevated viewpoint along the coastal highway. From the overlook, looking south, you can see the small hills on the southern side of Jishan Bay, the volcanic crater at the hilltop, as well as Guikou Cape and Xinshe Sea Cliff — a uniquely layered and continuous coastal landscape. The East Coast National Scenic Area Administration has set up a convenient rest area here, planted with shady Terminalia catappa trees, where visitors can dine and take a break.
