The six-day Lunar New Year holiday is almost here—have you planned your overseas trip yet? Based on big data analysis, travel search engine Skyscanner released its “2017 Lunar New Year Taiwanese Travelers Abroad” report on the 11th. The data shows that Taiwanese travelers tend to go abroad during two key periods of the Lunar New Year holiday—mainly from the day before New Year’s Eve to the first day of the new year, accounting for 46% of all travel during the festive period.The most popular departure time is New Year’s Eve itself, chosen by 18%.The second peak occurs on the fifth day of the new year, accounting for 10% of all travel.

The report also lists the 10 most popular destinations among Taiwanese travelers during the Lunar New Year. The data shows that Japan remains the hottest destination, with five cities including Tokyo making the list, accounting for 50% of all choices.

The chart also shows that all 10 destinations are in nearby Asian regions, indicating that although this Lunar New Year holiday is relatively long, short-haul trips remain more popular among Taiwanese travelers due to factors such as the tradition of family reunions.

This survey is based on the latest statistics from Taiwanese users searching for destinations on the Skyscanner website and mobile app, with departure dates between January 26 and February 5, 2017.
