A cultural haven for simple living: a café + homestay – “Hulu Café”

Many cafés rich in artistic ambiance not only fulfill basic dining needs but also frequently host lectures, showcases, unplugged or live music performances. Taichung’s “Hulu Café,” started by musicians, incorporates these elements and even features a homestay on its upper floor, offering travelers a cozy space to enjoy music, coffee, and a moment of rest for the soul.

Established in August 2009, Hulu Café is a “dream café” co-created by accordionist Wang Yanmeng and Open Eye band vocalist Mimi Jiang (Ah Mi), with the store name "forro" meaning "for all," aiming to create a friendly and warm environment.

Transformed from an old building, Hulu Café was mainly renovated by Taichung-based Have Fun Design Company, revitalizing the old structure under the principle of “showcasing the past.” Upon entering the café, one can see suspended truncated stairs, and the most eye-catching feature – dead branches hanging upside down from the ceiling – are withered crepe myrtles that died during the transplanting process.

The first-floor interior is mostly inspired by ideas from Ah Mi, featuring many of her and Wang Yanmeng’s collectibles, including an accordion. The second floor of Hulu functions as a homestay, with four room types: Rock Room, Single Room, Princess Room, and Lohas Room. The Princess Room uses a pink color scheme to create a dreamy style, while the Lohas Room allows guests to enjoy the balcony space on the second floor. All guests can enjoy a free drink and a light snack downstairs, but due to limited rooms, some may be prioritized for musicians during performances. Those wishing to book are advised to reserve at least two weeks in advance.
