Amsterdam’s Most Adorable Museum – The Cat Cabinet

In the 1660s, wealthy individuals in Amsterdam, Netherlands, began settling along the Herengracht canal between Leidsestraat and Vijzelstraat. The buildings in this area were often constructed using imported sandstone from abroad, and their doors and pillars were adorned with elaborate carvings. As a result, this stretch was also known as the “Golden Bend” at the time.

In this elegant and upscale district lies a grand residence that attracts a steady stream of visitors every day – the Cat Cabinet, beloved among cat enthusiasts. This cat-themed private museum was founded by Bob Meijer, a passionate cat lover, in memory of his beloved cat J.P. Morgan, who accompanied him for 17 years.

The museum showcases a variety of cat-related artworks and collectibles, including paintings, sculptures, posters, calendars, toys, and decorations. Cats are depicted in various moods and forms through the lens of different artists – sometimes elegant, sometimes adorable, sometimes aloof, sometimes mischievous, sometimes cunning, and sometimes mysterious. Perhaps no other animal in the world possesses as many facets as the cat. The museum also houses three friendly cats, who seem to take on the role of unofficial ambassadors. They approach visitors for head rubs and seem to say, “Welcome, feel free to look around!”
